Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) steelmaking is, worldwide, the most frequently applied process. According to world steel organization statistical report, 2021, it saw a total production share of 73.2%, or 1371.2 million tons per year in 2020. The rest is produced Electric Arc (EAF)-based mills (26.3%), and only very few open-hearth induction furnace-based mills. BOF technology remains leading based on its undoubted advantages productivity liquid composition control. started as LD process 70 years ago, with first heat November 1952 mill Linz, Austria. name was formed from letters two sites industrial scale plants, Linz Donawitz, both history development have been honored multiple anniversary publications over last decades.
